This is a story of missed opportunities mostly connected to money – or so it seems. While     traveling the US by rental car, you tend to forget what money does or does not do for you. For instance, when we rent a smaller car explicitly with navigational system but, after the company failed to provide a functioning one, we simply got a bigger car with integrated GPS. We ran with it. Positive? When we reached the next destination, the area of Crater Lake National Park, we were reminded once again, that we were supposed to book a camp site – via phone or webpage – in advance taking from us any flexibility regarding our route. Negative! It basically wrecks the reason why I go camping in the first place. If I am forced to book every campsite in advance, I am no longer able to decide where I want to stay a bit longer (or not): if I like it (or not). So late at night at Diamond Lake, we decided to put up our tent at a spot that seemed reserved but was in fact empty. Anyway…

Diamond Lake, indeed

… I talked about this (capitalist) tactic earlier… What I know now: Just ignore the signs at the en-trance saying that the campground is full because fully booked does not mean full! With that in mind we arrived in California in the Redwoods. Not knowing that we’d have to struggle with next, soon to be continued…
